scowling angel

Halloween on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill was actually bigger than the M Street celebration in D.C. — impressive, to say the least. There were monsters and ghosts, angels and demons, as far as you could see up and down the street.

And cops. Many, many, many cops. According to news reports the next morning, almost 400 cops were out patrolling the celebration.

Apparently there has been violence in the past associated with the Franklin Street Halloween celebration. And while that's certainly bad, and the cops may have helped deter a repeat incident, I can't help but get nervous around that many police officers.

400 cops is scarier than all the demons, ghouls and monsters I saw out that night.

As for this picture, I love it. I spent an hour or so taking pictures, and somehow got caught up in the trick where you use a long exposure time, couple it with a flash and your zoom, and hope for the best.

So, you know, all my pictures from that night look pretty much the same. Oops.

But this one, I like. The flash didn't fire, which is probably part of it. And it's such an ambiguous image, while the face stands out. I really wish this hadn't been taken on Halloween - no idea why, but I just feel like that would have made it even better.
